In an effort to live up to the above motto, I am taking discarded liquor bottles and turning them into unique table lamps.
The colored bottles were easy to decide what to do, but the clear bottles posed a challenge. It was then that I came upon the concept of coloring the inside of the bottle.
I try to match the original contents of the bottle or pick a color from the label (if there is one) to co-ordinate. I do still make clear bottles since it seems people want the brand / label and not the coloring.
The lamps vary from simple socket and plug to more eloborate lamps with bases and decorative tops.
As an ex electrician, I know the how to when dealing with electricity safety. All the lamps have what is known as a U.L. knot in the socket so no wiring will pull out. I also use and additional simple knot near the inside of the exit hole so the cordage cannot be accidentally yank out. The socket is correctly wired with proper polarity.
I have changed my assembly process and now use a strain relief at the exit hole. This is a plastic clip that eliminates the cord pulling out of the bottle. I am also adding a black sleeve to the white cord to help make it less visible from inside clear glass bottles.
The lamps listed do not come with shades. I feel shades are just too personal and are the final touch to make your lamp fit into your decor, not to mention they are costly and difficult to ship.
When showing the lamps I used a 8″ shade (red scallop) and a 11″ shade. These can be bought from your local department or big box store. generally a nice shade will run between $10 and $15. These sockets will not take a uno shade unless noted.
The width across the bottom is what is referred to as the lampshade size. The shade is normally 40% of the total height of the lamp, from the top of the slant to the bottom of the lamp.
If you have an existing shade and want a similar one, simply measure it and find a shade with similar measurements. If the measurements are not exactly the same as your shade, the height is the most important size to match with your existing shade.
If you do not have an existing shade or simply want something different in style and/or size, measure from the top of the lamp’s harp to just below the socket in which the bulb fits.
